Outdoor Sketching
In order to cultivate the abilities and qualities of art students to perceive, discover and create beauty, on the early morning of June 19th, the art class of the Senior High School Division of our school meticulously organized an outdoor sketching practice. Under the guidance of teachers Zhang Cheng, Wei Lei and Liu Shuaikang, all the senior two art students were filled with anticipation and excitement as they set off for the ancient village of Zhaji in southern Anhui Province. It's worth mentioning that this well-preserved Ming and Qing architectural complex, with its neatly arranged eave towers, winding streams, quaint stone-paved alleys and overlapping blue-tiled rooflines, offers students an excellent natural and cultural sketching classroom where teachers and students would conduct an immersive one-week writing activity here. Meanwhile, through on-site observation, sketching and color expression, they would deeply understand the essence of traditional architectural aesthetics, accumulate vivid creative materials, and effectively enhance their artistic expression ability and aesthetic taste.
To begin with, students set up the drawing boards, and before their eyes is the neatly arranged dark tiles of Zhaji, just like a long scroll painting unfolding slowly from a scroll. The texture is tinted with the gentle blending of ink-gray and brown.
What's more, even though it was raining gently, it did not dampen students' enthusiasm for the beautiful scenery of the ancient town. Looking back and gazing, students realized that those touching scenes had already been deeply imprinted in their minds. Later on, returning to the warm indoor environment, they couldn't wait to use their brushes to permanently capture this beautiful moment.
In addition, as dusk spread over the ancient village of Zhaji, the last touch of bluish-green color on the drawing board was just being wiped off. Also, students set up grills on the open ground, with the crackling charcoal fire illuminating the mossy ground. To be concrete, the chicken wings were sizzling on the iron grid, cumin mingled with the aroma of peachwood smoke wafting over the stone bridge. Besides, someone was holding a roasted corn and arguing about the curvature of the horse-head wall in the painting. Evidently, with the stream flowing, the lanterns shining, and the laughter startling the sleeping birds away, the residual warmth of the setting sun was blended into the smoky aroma of the grilled skewers.
Last but not the least, before the return journey, the cobblestone road was still wet with morning dew. Moreover, students had already set off towards the Peach Blossom Lake. When the bamboo raft cut through the mirror-like water, the glittering golden light leaked through the gaps between fingers and forms silver threads. The reflection of the green mountains was blurred by the bamboo poles into a green silk. The laughter of the rowers startled the ripples, the faint colors on the painting paper all dissolved into the gentle twilight of the tranquil lake.
In conclusion, this event is a significant part of our school's artistic characteristic education - when the morning mist of Zhaji spreads over the drawing boards, and when the shimmering waves of Taohuawan soak the pen tips, students touch the texture of traditional aesthetics among the white walls and black tiles, who sense the warmth of art in the interweaving of fireworks and ink. More remarkably, not only does the drawing board embody the sketching techniques of the landscapes in southern Anhui, but also nurtures interdisciplinary aesthetic experiences, measuring the layout of the ancient village from a geographical perspective, interpreting the architectural patterns with a historical viewpoint, and depicting the morning and evening atmospheres through literary thinking. Therefore, this walking art class turned the xuan paper into a medium connecting the classroom with the outside world, thus transforming the slate road into a nurturing ground for creativity, and ultimately leaving a vivid illustration of 'art is life' in students' memories.
